The basic aim of welding is to join two pieces of metal or thermoplastic in a manner that the joint will have sufficient strength and at least the same physical properties as that of base material. While welding, it is very important to consider about safety. Before starting any project, a welder must know the risks involved with hand tool and power tool.
There is a risk of second and third-degree burns from the heat, sparks, and slag that fly off the welding arc or material during welding. Welders also run the risk of inhaling fumes created by fluxes and metal dusts associated with the welding arc or material. Welders are at risk for developing noise-induced hearing loss, back injuries, and eye injuries from flying sparks or metal slag.
Welding makes use of a filler metal that melts and joins with the pieces being welded together to create a bond between them that has integrity as one piece. In some cases, the filler metal melts to create a pool of molten metal that cools. Welders need safety equipment to prevent injuries from occurring before, during and after welding.
Welding produces fumes and gases. A non-metal filter mask can be used to avoid that. Gas welding also produce toxic fumes which are harmful for health. Fumes that are created while using flux cored arc welding are very hazardous to the health. It contains fluorine and chlorine that can be very dangerous.
While using grinder, we need to take extra precaution because it will cause sparks and danger of getting burn by hot material.
A welder may get burn injuries during welding operation if proper precautions are not taken.
It may cause severe injury or death.
Welding helmets are important items of safety equipment for welders. They protect their eyes which can easily be damaged if they get too close to the welding arc or material. It is very important for a welder to wear the correct shade rated welding helmet. Shades 9, 10 and 11 can be difficult to see through under some conditions. Welders should check their manufacturer’s guide or instructions before purchasing a welding helmet.
Welding jackets provide protection from heat and spatter during welding. Welding gloves are available with leather palms and cotton, cotton/nylon blends or heavy-duty gloves made of Kevlar® to protect the skin from heat. Welding is hard on clothes so splatter guards are also available for sleeves and legs that extend down past the boot top.
Knee pads are used to provide comfort while working in an awkward position, to protect the knees from sparks, dirt and hot surfaces. They are usually made of stiff plastic covered with a cloth sock that is adjustable for height. Welders also use elbow pads to provide additional protection for their elbows when they are working in an awkward position or crouching down.
Before starting any project, a welder must choose the tools and equipment cautiously and follow safety precautions.
A welder must wear safety goggles to protect eyes from flying sparks and molten metal splashes during welding operation.
A welding bag is a bag that’s designed for holding welding supplies and personal items. The materials used in the construction of this bag are generally sturdier than a standard backpack. Welding bags can be great for traveling to multiple work sites, as they’re often small enough to fit underneath airplane seats and leave room for personal items.
Welders must use earplugs or ear muff because the noise produced by welding machine is loud enough to cause damage to ears. It can also affect hearing ability. Effects of loud noise:
Loud sound can cause hearing loss and tinnitus. Loud sound may also lead to high blood pressure, which is serious health issue.
Fire extinguishers must be available at every corner of welding area and it should be placed in good protective cases because fire can catch up very quickly.
First aid box must be kept nearby welding area because it can help to avoid injuries and accidents. Basic first aid equipment’s should be included in the kit, such as bandage, gauze pads, adhesive tape and antiseptic wipes.
