The History of NVIDIA and What Makes It Successful

Compared to many other computer parts, graphics cards are among the most recent additions to many personal computers. One of the most dominating brands in the graphics card market is NVIDIA.

NVIDIA is a well-known brand in the computer parts market. Almost any casual PC builder and enthusiast has heard of the brand. They are technically the ones that have created the most advanced graphic cards we know of today. In this article, we will be exploring the history of NVIDIA, from its beginning and where it is right now, and look into the things that have made it successful.

The Creation of Graphics Cards

As stated earlier, GPUs or Graphics Processing Units (commonly known as graphic cards) are the newest parts of computers. Although programming language had made graphics, the part itself wasn’t developed until much earlier on.

The very first GPU wasn’t created by NVIDIA, despite many people believing it. The honor of building the world’s first GPU is given to Intel, and it created it about a decade before NVIDIA was even established. Intel’s very first graphic card only had four kilobytes of memory. If you compare that to today’s modern GPUs, we have at least four million more kilobytes in our entry-level GPUs today.

After the creation of the world’s very first GPU, NVIDIA then came to be, and it brought upon one of the most advanced GPUs at the time: the NV1.

The Innovative NVIDIA

NVIDIA is all about innovation, and after NV1’s success, the company has started to find its stride in the world of GPUs. It began to develop more advanced GPUs with even more VRAM, and they become smaller every new release. As a result, GPUs started to look more attractive in people’s eyes, and the rise of gaming in the early 1990s and 2000s only continued to push the brand forward.

The Rise of Gaming

The rise of gaming attributed to the success of NVIDIA. As the early 2000s started to demand GPUs with higher processing power, NVIDIA took up the challenge and began to build GPUs necessary for the era.

It’s quite accurate to say that the gaming industry has fueled the success of NVIDIA. Millions of gamers promote this brand among their peers, telling them that it’s the best brand in the market. Millions flocked to the brand. They purchased NVIDIA GPUs left and right, pushing the company into the billion-dollar business we know of today. Many experts attribute its main success came from the powerhouse NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080.

The Powerhouse (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080)

According to Steam, about 70% of its overall player base uses NVIDIA as its GPU. The specific part that millions of gamers use up to this day is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 is considered the best GPU of the decade, despite being over five years old. It’s a dominant GPU and has shown its competitors what the NVIDIA brand can do. It can even compete with recently released GPUs this day. It’s just that good.

It’s a very reliable GPU with a reasonable price tag. Compared to the more recent GPUs we have today, this one ranks number one in cost-efficiency.

The Domination of NVIDIA

The success of NVIDIA is seen in its accessibility. Almost every computer parts shop and custom computer builder website sports an NVIDIA graphics card. That shows how accessible they are now and how they have fully saturated the market. Its accessibility has translated to sales, becoming the brand that has sold the most GPUs in the world.

Currently, NVIDIA has sold over nine million GPUs worldwide. Its closest competitor, AMD, has only sold about a million. That’s how much NVIDIA is dominating the GPU market, and it’s expected to dominate in the coming years.

The Future

NVIDIA has many more advanced GPUs in-store for its loyal fanbase. Its recently released NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 is considered the best video card ever been made. However, its almost $2,000 price tag is dissuading many gamers from purchasing it.  The brand continues to build even more complex GPUs for the future, but the brand is also expanding its horizons by investing in AI.

The future of NVIDIA seems to come from a mix of AI and GPU investments. The research and development department is undoubtedly getting the most of the funds from investors as the company continues to grow. NVIDIA also seems to be interested in virtual technology and has plans to penetrate the market with its own tech.

The future for NVIDIA is bright. As more investors start to invest in the brand, it is more likely to captivate consumers into buying it. It will then continue to grow and start dominating the market for years to come.Meta title: A Closer Look into the History of NVIDIA
