Knowing When You Should See A Neurologist?

A neurologist is a physician who specializes in the treatment of disorders or diseases of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. This physician treats patients suffering from a variety of neurological disorders. These physicians examine patients who have been referred by a primary care physician. The consultation usually begins with an examination of the patient by the physician. The patient will also provide the physician with a complete medical history.

Patients are often referred to a neurologist after a stroke, for dementia, headaches, sleep disorders, epilepsy, tumors of the nervous system, Parkinson’s disease or a number of other conditions. The treatment of disease depends on the patient’s condition and the problem at hand. So when should you see a neurologist? In many cases, your primary care physician will refer you to a specialist. There are certain conditions and symptoms that may cause your doctor to refer you to a neurology specialist. Some symptoms include:

Constant headaches

While everyone suffers from headaches occasionally, chronic headaches can be an indication of a larger problem. If you suffer from frequent migraine attacks, you should see a neurology specialist.

Feeling weak

If you really feel physically weak, you should see a neurologist. For example, if you have difficulty moving properly or lifting something that you used to be able to lift quite easily, it may be a neurological problem.

Dizziness

If you feel dizzy all the time, you should see a specialist. These doctors often deal with patients who suffer from vertigo and other types of dizziness. Vertigo causes its victims to feel like they are spinning or losing their balance. These disorders can be remedied with the help of a neurologist.

Epilepsy

If you suffer from seizures on a regular basis, you may be referred to a neurologist. Some seizures do not require the help of a specialist. Seizures caused by low blood sugar, for example, can be treated by addressing the issue at hand. Seizures with unknown causes may require the help of a neurology specialist.

There are a variety of reasons why a patient may be referred to an expert in the field of neurology. Regardless of what symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to first consult your primary care physician. Depending on the severity of your condition or the condition you are facing, you may then be referred to a neurology specialist.
