Cybersecurity professionals must comprehend the gravity of this matter, given the sophisticated landscape of threats emerging in parallel. Still not convinced?   • Growth of API Security: The tremendous growth of public APIs and the countless private APIs that businesses use internally or with partners signifies the need for robust API Security. Projections highlight that the global API security market size will grow to USD 3,034 million by 2028, from USD 744 million in 2023, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 32.5%.
  • Exposure of sensitive data: API is an expanded attack surface for a potential cybercriminal. Data Ventures mentions that 9 out of 10 APIs exposed personally identifiable information (PII) and sensitive data to threat actors, whilst more than half a billion records have already been exposed via vulnerable APIs.
  • Regulation and Compliance Stressing API Security: With the ever-evolving cyber landscape, organizations, companies, and governments spotlight API security worldwide to improve their defenses against cybercrime. GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA have specific mandates about securing data access and transfers, much of which occurs through APIs. Non-compliance can result in severe penalties.
  • API-based attacks are on the rise: APIs’ extensive use makes them a prime target for attackers. Getastra highlights that malicious API traffic increased in 2022 by 681%, and there has been a 286% increase in API threats quarter over quarter. This surge underscores the evolving threat landscape where APIs have become the new favourite for cybercriminals.

TechTarget’s Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) mentions that more than 9 out of 10 organizations have experienced at least one incidence of security involving insecure APIs, whereas almost 60% of them have encountered several security incidents involving unsecured APIs during a yearly period.
  • Financial Impact: API vulnerabilities can be costly for organizations in terms of financial losses and reputational damage. This economic impact of inadequate API security measures is not only about data loss; it includes reputational damage, customer trust erosion, legal implications, and regulatory fines.

APIs must be protected
