I still remember the era when people went crazy for AR and VR. From individuals to businesses, everyone was finding AR/VR true fun. But that was the problem! They only found the fun, not real use!
After being a trend for a while, AR/VR started becoming the least useful technology except for some manufacturing companies which opted for AR for remote troubleshooting and some gaming agencies which developed AR/VR-enabled mobile games and apps.
Exactly when tech enthusiasts started believing the death end of wearable computing is so near, the leak of Apple Glass gave a shining hope to the entire AR/VR industry. It has been now confirmed that Apple is going to launch a very futuristic smart wearable glass which could revolutionize several industries especially healthcare, manufacturing and real estate.
In this blog, I will share everything about Apple Glass including its release date, price, leaks and industries which Apple Glass will revolutionize. However, before discussing Apple Glass, we should know the fundamental differences between AR and VR.
People talking about AR and VR generally use these two terms interchangeably as they do not know the real difference.
AI (Augmented Reality) is the technology to add digital elements to a live view which is often captured using the camera of the mobile phone or tablet. The game Pokemon Go is the best example of AR technology.
On the other hand, VR is a technology that shuts out the physical world boundaries and provides the complete digital experience of an environment to the users. However, it requires a specific type of devices such as HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Google Cardboard.
Now when you know the difference between AR and VR, let’s talk about Apple Glass which works on AR technology.
Apple has been trying to lead the AR gadgets market for around 10 years. The launch of ARkit in 2017 was a significant try from Apple to be supremacy in the AR industry.
The ARKit is nothing but the AR development platform for iOS mobile devices. Using this platform, mobile app development companies can build user-friendly AR-enabled iPhone and iPad mobile apps.
Apple’s decision on launching ARkit turned out to be a game-changing decision. Since its launch in September 2017 to March 2018, iOS apps developed on the ARKit platform were downloaded for 13 million times.
To keep the throne of AR market leader and, of course, to solve some deep-rooted industry challenges, Apple is reportedly working on Apple Glass. Many rumours suggest that a ‘super-secret’ Apple team is working on the revolutionary wearable gadget which can turn any surface into an interactive surface.
One of the reasons to trust these rumours is that Apple has recently acquired many AR/VR companies such as Akonia Holographics, Vrvana, PrimeSense, Metaio, Faceshift and opened job opportunities for AR/VR engineers and developers.
According to Bloomberg, the earliest launch of Apple Glass can be possible in 2023. However, TF International Securities analyst suggests that the Apple Glass will be launched in 2020.
Giving hope, Jon Prosser, a reputable Apple leaker, stated that we can get our hands on Apple Glass much sooner than expected – in March -June 2021! Jon Prosser also suggested that Apple could just launch it for the media and force buyers to wait for some more months.
Jon Prosser also disclosed that the price of the Apple Glass would be just $499. This surely seems low, at least when we compare it with its biggest competitor – Microsoft Hololens 2 – which costs around $3500.
However, we should note that Microsoft Hololens 2 works on many built-in individual electronic devices and software. While the Apple Glass would be working by establishing a connection with the iPhone or iPad. Meaning, Apple Glass would have a very less number of components.
As of now, we are able to know only a few Apple Glass features which are listed below.
We still do not know the exact specifications of the Apple Glass. However, there are some rumours from multiple sources that I am combining and sharing here.
For you, Apple Glass may be a fun gadget. But for industries and businesses, it is a ‘profitable’ gadget that enables them to increase productivity and reduce operating costs!
Big complex machines drive the manufacturing industry forward. The malfunction of the machines or a small error brings the whole production cycle to halt. Businesses suffer a continuous loss until a technician visits the site and fixes the issue. But with Apple Glass, technicians can remotely assist the in-house team to fix the issue, thanks to a live interactive video streaming.
The real estate industry is one of the least technologically advanced industries. Still, the majority of the business processes including house inspection are performed on-site or manually which is restricting real estate businesses from reaching a large number of buyers. But now with Apple Glass, people who are looking for a property or accommodation can take a virtual tour of the house or property instantly. This way, real estate companies can seamlessly generate more leads without spending a lot of money.
AR technology has already been very successful in the healthcare industry. However, usability is the biggest challenge as many healthcare professionals find AR technology complex. But when it comes to Apple Glass, Apple will surely have usability in the mind to make it user friendly like other Apple products. Using Apple Glass, healthcare professionals can collaborate remotely and seniors can help juniors in real-time with surgery without being physically present in the hospital.
Apple Glass is surely a revolutionary gadget. Its aggressive pricing and usability will truly revolutionize the most percentage of GDP contributing industries. It will also redefine the buying experience of the users and give many opportunities for businesses to create multiple revenue streams. All rumours of the Apple Glass are from experts and trustworthy resources. However, it is still a long way to get our hands on Apple Glass but this wait will worth all hype. That is for what Apple is known for – doing justice with impatient souls!
