Scrum is one of the most popular courses in project management. The three primary roles with Scrum make it easier to understand the hierarchy and how to go about creating the right atmosphere in your office. Scrum consists of roles that are better understood with the duties they are assigned to play in the project management setup. These include –

Product Owner

The Product Owner focuses on the value of a product, the return on investment from it and the total cost of the entire ownership of the same. 

Development team

These are the ones who focus on how to build something and ensure it is done completely. The increment has to be releasable and usable at the same time.

Scrum Master

The Scrum Master ensures that all of the work is understood, with the framework followed correctly and used to help the business as well as the team. Metaphors to understand the roles better –

Captain

Certified Scrum Masters are part of a team that helps navigate a ship, which in this situation is the project. They use their understanding and experience to steer the same in the right direction. As expected, storms will cause disruptions but the team needs to have the experience to deal with them. In Scrum, the Product Owner is the Captain with the product backlog acting as the oar.

The Crew

The crewman rows the boat and controls its direction and are the ones responsible for keeping the ship afloat and moving towards the destination. In Scrum terminology, the crew is the Development team and they deliver a growing increment of the completed product.

The Bosun

The Scrum Master is the one who ensures the right activities are taking place on the ship. He is responsible for telling everyone what their roles are and fixing the ship at regular intervals, and all the other activities to keep everyone in shape and ready.  To make it easier to understand, the progress is bought forth by the development team, the product owner provides the focus and direction and the Scrum Master oversees any dangers with the journey. 

Mixing the different roles

When you receive a CSM certification, you can apply for multiple roles and a person can work in a stream they get the most satisfaction out of Certified Scrum Master training and other major cities of the States allows professionals from all around to hone their skill sets quite efficiently. Depending on their skill set, they can direct their efforts and help in the smoother sailing of the ship. A performing team is characterized primarily by the interactions among the different members and there is no real fixed rule. The certification can help in understanding that no role is effectively served or one of the roles isn’t serviced at all.

Different responsibilities

Depending on whether you want to row or steer, you can choose a role that suits your fancy as a development team member or product owner. A Scrum Master and Development team member has to decide whether they want to drum or row. By not doing either, the ship may move fastest when the drums are being banged, so understanding which role you’d like to play here is also crucial.

When a storm is imminent or it hits, having all hands on deck is crucial. The ship needs to be steered to safety or risk getting capsized. If a wave is big enough to hit from the side, everybody sinks at once. That’s why every crew member must perform their role the right way to keep it afloat. In the Scrum world, a storm can be related to the unexpected events that can occur when it comes to product delivery. Not having focused or committed people can end up sounding the death knell of the product.

A PO must trust his/her team and push them to focus on only the ultimate goal – the delivery of a product. The Development Team at least have the freedom to adapt to the shape and architecture of the product and ensure it is releasable. The Product Owner must allow the team to organize well and deliver the goal on time. The Scrum Master must also adopt a style of leadership that shouldn’t dwell on processes but ultimately results.
