Around 96 percent of Americans own a smartphone. With so many people carrying around those delicate pieces of metal and glass, you’re bound to get a lot of cracks and fractures. Thankfully, that means that you’re not the first person to break a phone screen.

And you definitely won’t be the last. And that means that there are several effective methods when it comes to cracked screen repair.

There’s actually a different level of repair for every kind of budget out there. Are you interested in learning more? If you are, then keep on reading and we’ll take you through everything you’ll want to know!

Why Do Screens Break So Easily?

There is one question that practically all smartphone owners seem to ask themselves at one point or another: “Why does my $1,000 phone seem to break so easily?”

It all really comes down to the compromise made between engineering reality and consumer demand. To put it another way, we want phones with huge displays that are beautiful and crisp. Unfortunately, that means having thin glass that can break pretty easily.

This is why it’s so important to always keep your phone safe and in a sturdy case.

What to Do Right Away

Cracked phone screens come in various levels of seriousness. They can range from light scratches to spiderweb patterns to fully missing pieces of glass. You could end up dealing with a simple cosmetic problem or a fully shattered screen.

The first thing you should do is assess the damage to the screen. That means putting your phone on a solid table and under a strong light. Don’t just give it a quick glance and then put it back in your pocket.

With a bit of stress testing and gentle poking, you should be able to see just how damaged the screen actually is. If your screen is able to stay in place, then you can probably keep using your phone as-is, assuming that the cracks don’t bother you.

If your cell phone is severely messed up, then you should back up your data as soon as you can. You want to get all of your videos, photos, and files saved somewhere else in case your phone dies and is gone forever.

If your phone has already stopped working, then it’s probably best to take it right to a professional repair store.

Method 1: Packing Tape

This is a cheap method that you should use if you’re just trying to hold out until you’re eligible for an upgrade. If you want to keep using your cracked cell phone and you don’t mind the risk of losing the screen, then cover the glass with a layer of packing tape.

Line up everything carefully and trim the excess tape with a sharp knife. Make sure that the tape is clear, of course.

Method 2: Screen Protector

This is a slight level up compared to the packing tape fix. This is going to help you make sure that you don’t have any noticeable seams. There’s also going to be a clear line around the corners of the screen’s glass.

However, this isn’t going to fix the cracks that are already on your screen. It will just stop more glass from chipping off.

Method 3: Replace the Screen Yourself

It’s actually possible for you to replace your cell phone screen by yourself. There are, however, a few important things that you need to keep in mind.

First, before you choose to go down this path, you should look up how much it will cost to get a replacement screen. The phone screens of today are very smart and aren’t all that cheap.

You also need to look at your phone’s warranty situation. If you’re someone who’s interested in fixing their phone themselves, then you likely aren’t that worried about preserving the warranty. However, it still won’t hurt to know if you’re going to void the warranty.

Lastly, unless you’re already experienced at fixing devices like these, you likely don’t have the necessary tools for this kind of job.

Thankfully, there are various stores that sell kits with all of the tools you need to fix a phone screen.

With all that, if you don’t know what you’re doing, then you could end up damaging the phone even more.

Method 4: Call In a Pro

Perhaps the best solution for most people is to simply take the cracked phone into a professional repair shop. If you have an iPhone, you should consider taking it to your local Apple store. You can also try out Apple’s new mail-in repairs program.

However, this can be expensive and take a long time. There are also private vendors who do really amazing jobs at affordable prices.

Fruit Fixed (www.fruitfixed.com) is just one online shop that comes to mind.
